Tips to Enhance your

Child's Independent Reading Skills

Practice the 20 sight words assigned to Kindergarten - Pick 1 word a week to focus on: find it in stories, write it in sentences.

 

Practice identifying letter names out of order every day.

 

Practice identifying letter sounds every day.

 

Read to your child every day

Point to the words as you read - This is very important for early readers. It forces them to look at the words which will help develop word recognition skills.

Sounds I hear

Say a simple word (ex: cat)

Ask your child what sound the word begins with, ends with, is in the middle - encourage your child to identify the sound not the letter name

Practice the 1st grade sight words.

How many Sounds

Say a simple word (ex: cat)

Ask your child how many sounds are the word

Example: CAT has three sounds - /c/ /a/ /t/

Example: CHIP has three sounds - /ch/ /i/ /p/

Vowel Sounds

Say a simple word (ex: chip, clap, limp, stump).

Ask your child to identify the vowel sound.

Then ask your child to identify how many sounds are in the word...

Example: 'stump' has 5 sounds - /s/ /t/ /u/ /m/ /p/

Example: 'chimp' has 4 sounds - /ch/ /i/ /m/ /p/

 

Spelling

Make spelling practice a priority. The more practice he/she has with reading words with familiar spelling patterns, the quicker he/she will be able to connect the written word with the spoken word in context.

Daily Reading Routine

Set up a daily reading time and special reading spot. Encourage your child to read every day.

 

Developing Fluency

Reading the same text or book multiple times increases word recognition, fluency and comprehension.

 

Read and Record

Most smartphones and tablets have a voice recording app. Have your child sit and record himself/herself reading. Encourage your child to listen to how they sound.

 

Spelling

Make spelling practice a priority. The more practice he/she has with reading words with familiar spelling patterns, the quicker he/she will be able to connect the written word with the spoken word in context.
